ULI Memphis and local developer Development Services Group are partnering to host a guided walking tour of the redeveloped Edge District in Downtown Memphis. The event will showcase the latest and upcoming properties throughout the neighborhood. The tour will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m., beginning at The Rise Apartments at 420 Monroe Ave., located on the site of the former Wonder Bread Factory.
Once known as Auto Row – a bustling center for car dealerships and repair shops in the mid-20th century – the Edge District has undergone recent transformation to a bustling neighborhood to live, work and play. DSG committed the past several years to reviving the downtown neighborhood, serving as the master developer for many adaptive reuse projects throughout the Edge District.
“DSG had an ambitious vision for the Edge District when we made our first investment,” said Ethan Knight, vice president of development at DSG. “We’re proud to witness and be part of the neighborhood’s transformation, and we want to educate our fellow community members and leaders about the endless opportunities the Edge has to offer professionally, personally and recreationally.”
Along the approximately half-mile route, participants will learn about the history of various properties and how they were redeveloped to serve the needs of the area today. Stops included in the tour are the Heartbreak Hotel, the Orleans Station apartments, and small businesses such as Rootstock and Inkwell. The event will conclude with drinks and light refreshments at The Ravine, a new outdoor public gathering space adjacent to the soon-to-open Memphis Made brewery.
“I’m excited to finally partner with DSG in offering this fresh and thoughtfully curated perspective on a neighborhood and area where I personally love to play and sometimes work. The recent growth and transformation in the Edge district continue to be downright inspiring. And in line with ULI’s broader mission, these are exactly the kinds of projects, events and conversations we look to continually adapt and help lead here locally in Memphis.” said Tonya Meeks, district council coordinator of ULI Memphis.
The guided walking tour is open to ULI members, students and the general public. Admission is free for ULI members, $20 for nonmembers, $15 for those who work in the public sector or are in ULI’s Young Leaders Group and $10 for students. Attendees must register online at memphis.uli.org/events.
At 4 p.m. prior to the tour, YLG members are exclusively invited to a presentation and discussion at The Rise with Knight, during which he will share details on DSG’s role in redeveloping select Edge District properties.
